Single Pane Window

Single pane windows are made of a single pane of glass.  Single pane glass windows are sub-standard, drafty, lack thermal heat resistance, and are occasionally unsafe.  Any single pane window will lack significant energy efficiency performance compared to that of a double pane window.

Double pane windows have two panes of glass separated by a layer of Argon or Krypton gas to enhance thermal performance.  Double pane windows often use a Low-E (low-emissivity) glass coating, that filter infrared light while simultaneously allowing visible light to enter your home.

If you have single pane windows, you can be assured that you are losing a significant amount of energy through such an outdated design..

Condensation &

  Fogging

When the seals between the panes of glass fail, it allows moisture to leak in causing condensation and fogging.

Common Causes of Condensation & Fogging:

  • Excess heat:  Excess heat and direct sun exposure cause the panes to expand and contract, softening and weakening the seals until they develop cracks allowing moist air in.

  • Puddling:  Windows without proper safeguards to prevent water from accumulating and forming puddles around the perimeter seals will fail sooner.

  • Aging:  Given enough time, the seals between panes will break down and allow moisture to enter in.

  • Installation:  Improperly installed windows generate the most problems.

When windows fog and fail, the only viable option is replacement.  Your best defense against failure is to buy windows with a good, long warranty from the beginning.

Aluminum Frame

  Window

Aluminum is a material with properties that conduct heat, thereby creating heat transfer.

During the summer months, aluminum frame windows will pull heat into the home.  During winter months aluminum frame windows will pull heat out of the home.

New aluminum windows are double pane with a thermal break.  Thermal breaks place a piece of non-conductive material in between the layers of aluminum to stop heat transfer.

Because of new energy efficiency standards, single-pane aluminum windows are no longer available to consumers in many states.
